Mercedes-Benz celebrates the 300 SL and the Le Mans 24 hour race

300 SL Le Mans 1952

1952: the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL won the Le Mans 24 hour race. 2012: Mercedes-Benz launches the sixth generation of its flagship car. To celebrate the event, Mercedes has decided to bring the car that won 60 years ago, driven by Hermann Lang and Fritz Riess, to Paris. The first 300 SL with its aluminium bodywork and famous gullwing doors, caused an immediate sensation, winning both first and second place (Theo Helfrich and Helmut Niedermayer came second).

Two other great cars are also on display, both successful at Le Mans: the SSK came in second in 1931 driven by Boris Iwanoski and Henri Stoffel, and the Sauber-Mercedes C9 won the race in 1989 with Jochen Mass, Manuel Reuter and Stanley Dickens at the wheel – its sister car finished second, driven by Mauro Baldi, Kenny Acheson and Gianfranco Brancatelli. Three outstanding cars, all from the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.
